Brown Butter Apple Dumpling Skillet
Ingredients
- 2 tangy apples like Granny Smith very large
- vanilla ice cream for serving
Dumpling Dough
- 1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1/2 cup butter, cut into small pieces very cold
- 5-6 tbsp whole milk
For the sauce
- ¼ cup butter
- ⅔ cup brown sugar not packed
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tsp vanilla extract optional
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
Instructions
for the dough
- Stir together the flour, sugar and salt in a medium size bowl. Use a pastry cutter or 2 forks to cut the butter into the flour until well incorporated and no large chunks of butter remain.
- Add 5 tbsp of milk and stir. If the dough is still crumbly and not coming together, add the remaining tbsp of milk. Divide the dough into 8 equal balls and place in the freezer for 15 minutes.
- Peel and core each apple and cut each into 4 equal slices. On a floured surface, Roll out a piece of dough into a thin circle. Place an apple slice into the center and wrap the dough around the apple, pinching to seal.
- Repeat with remaining dough and apple slices. Place each dumpling into a 10 inch skillet or 9 inch pie plate. Set aside in the fridge or freezer while you make the sauce and preheat the oven to 350 Fahrenheit.
To make the sauce
- Add the butter to a small saucepan over medium heat. Once melted, swirl the pan frequently until the butter turns medium brown and smells toasty.
- Add the sugars, water, vanilla and cinnamon. Stir. Bring to a boil and let boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat and pour over the dumplings.
- Bake for 35 minutes. Remove from the oven and spoon some of the sauce over the dumplings. Return to the oven and bake another 10 minutes.
- Serve apple dumplings hot with ice cream and top with more brown butter sauce.
